Sailing Word Definition
Abeam Term indicating the direction 90 degrees from the boat's centerline.
About To tack; "ready about" means ready to tack.
ACC Americas Club Class
Aft The back of the boat
Afterguard The helmsman, tactician and navigator--the big decision makers on the boat.
Amidships The middle of the boat
Astern The back of the boat
Backstay Rigging (generally stainless steel wire) that supports the mast by connecting the masthead to the stern.
Bail To take water out of the boat
Ballast Weight carried in the below the waterline to increase stability
Barberhauler A second line attached to a jib or genoa to move the clew position more inboard or outboard
Batten Fiberglass or carbon strip which is inserted into a pocket in the sail to achieve a desired sail shape
Beam The width of a boat
Beat To sail into the wind, tacking back and forth to go upwind
Beaufort Scale A measurement of wind strength and sea state
