Sailing Word |
Definition |
Heel |
The way a boat tilts to one side as she sails. |
Helm |
The tiller or wheel used to steer the boat; the ammount of force on the rudder as felt by the helmsman, often an indication of poor sail trim and balance. |
Hike |
To extend one's weight as far from the boat's centerline as possible to minimize heel and increase performance. |
Hiking Straps |
Staps in a dinghy to facilitate aggressive hiking; staps that dinghy sailor hook their feet under to better "hike" their weight out. |
Hoist |
To raise a sail up by pulling the halyard. |
Hourglass |
A spinnaker when twisted (as the result of a poor hoist or gybe) |
Hull |
A boats shell, not including appendages, deck, cabin or rig. |
In Irons |
A boat head to wind, with no forward movement or steerage. |
Inverter |
A device used to convert DC power to AC power. |
Jacklines |
Lines running fore and aft on the deck, used to clip onto with saftey harnes and tether to prevent going overboard. |
Jib |
A headsail small enough that it does not overlap the mainsail. |
Kedge Off |
Using an anchor to pull a grounded boat back into deeper water. |
Keelboat |
A term used to refer to all sailboats with a fixed or heavy keel; not a dinghy, skiff, or centerboarder. |
Kelson |
The structural backbone of a sailboat (particularly those made of wood); a strong beam running for and aft along the bilge of a boats hull to which the keel is attached |
Kicker |
Australian for vang, mate. Pulls the boom down and forward increasing the leech tension of the mainsail, and bending the lower secton of the mast forward (depending on the rig setup). |
